Top Tips about getting a job in the UK

Average Income in the UK

I need tips about UK job hunting! Where do I start from?

It is advisable that you find a job before you move to England and the UK. The best tip is to just gather as much information as you can and start applying. Getting a job
while you are still in you home country will reduce stress levels significantly and will make things like getting a visa (if applicable) and finding accommodation easier. On the other hand, you may intend to come to the UK and then get a job, if
  • you are the adventurous type and/or you have quite a bit of savings and/or there is a lot of demand for your job in the UK
  • you just want to come and see if life here suits you and you are not looking for anything permanent at the moment
  • you are looking for some extra money i.e. a part-time job, to complement your main job or studies
  • and/or you come from an EU country.
Whether you want to get a job before or after you arrive in the UK, click on the links on the left for some tips for job hunting, as well as useful information about the income you can expect in the UK.

Some Stats

Unemployment in April 2011. Source: BBC News
The good news: Although unemployment in England is on the rise, it is still kept at pretty low levels in comparison to other countries: 7.7% according to the latest statistics. From my personal experience in this country, you are never unemployed unless you want to (that is true if you are not very selective). The bad news: It is a myth that, once you come to England, you are a rich woman or man. Bear in mind that, even if you are a highly qualified person, the first job that you get may not be your dream job. British employers trust employees with working experience in Britain, so consider your first job a necessary step in the ladder.
